Originating in the West Indies, ginger is an herbaceous perennial measuring about 1 meter in height. We can trace the use of ginger in Asia as far back as three millennia. The ginger root is the source of the essential oil. Ginger essential oil is used in aromatherapy as a carminative and antispasmodic to help relieve digestive discomfort, and to relieve cold and cough symptoms.
